Constance’s Dark Path

Constance held up her lantern and pulled her cloak tighter around her chest.  She muttered to herself, “Don’t be scared.”

An unexpected voice whispered over her shoulder, “Why?  Do ghosts frighten you?”

Constance yelped and dropped her lantern.

A Cheshire smile illuminated the darkness before the lantern floated up and sparked to light.  “Buck up, dear.  It’s only assailants and highwaymen that need fear my road.”

Constance accepted the lantern back.  “Then why did my father warn me?”

This was written for the Sammi Cox weekend writing prompt #82, ‘Illuminate.’ I hope you’re having an excellent Monday!
