Do You See the Colors of The Current?

The young man lay on the dock, chin tucked nicely in his fingers at the edge of the wood.  “What’s it look like, under the ocean?”

A mermaid held onto the buoy just off the edge of the dock, anchoring herself in place.  “The water distorts the comings and goings of light in a different way from the air.  The deeper I plunge into the ocean, the darker everything seems, the stranger the colors.”  She held out a hand.  “Would you like to see?”

The man shook his head.  “Nah.  I couldn’t breathe under there.”

The mermaid chuckled, put the hand up to her mouth to hide her giggle.

“Maybe you do have all the colors in the universe, but I bet we got something you don’t.”  He turned around, grabbed something out of a pocket, and showed it to her.

Her eyes widened.  “Oh!  It’s so yellow!”

The man ripped off a corner of the plastic packaging and removed the contents.  “Us humans call this a chocolate bar.  It’s like… Imagine seeing a new color, except this will be taste.”  He broke off a section.  “Here, have a piece.”

The mermaid put her salty fingers around the brown piece of candy and sniffed it warily before putting it in her mouth.  She chewed, then swallowed.  “What was I supposed to get out of that?”

“It wasn’t pleasant?” the man asked, confused.  “Chocolate’s very sweet.  Humans love it!”

She wiped the corners of her mouth, making sure all of the chocolate was gone.  “This… I think I understand now how you feel about not being able to see the true colors of the ocean, because I can’t taste the true joy of the forests.”

“It doesn’t bother me.”  The man smiled.  “I can see enough to know you’re beautiful.”

“And I like you enough that your delicious flesh would still set uneasily in my stomach.”

This was written for Reena’s Exploration Challenge #79, color!

On Wednesdays, I like to showcase a prompt that is new to me if possible.  Check out Reena’s long-running prompt, and definitely participate!  A new challenge should be coming out soon.

Carnivore gourmets are fickle like a child on a farm that realizes that they’ve been eating her pets. Only the pets that can keep up the unconditional love can be spared but not often, and of course, as cannibals can attest, people taste like pigs and even mermaids like pork dishes even though they insist on telling fishy stories.
        Well done build and surprise.

  2. Jules says:

    Well… I used to like mermaids… 😉
Well I still do. I would like to think that most are not the same as ‘her!’
But then if human flesh doesn’t sit well… maybe she should be eating something else?
