Meadow mist freezes;
Fur-bearers curl in slumber,
Insects chirp their last.
This was written for Colleen Chesebro’s Tanka Tuesday #152, poet’s choice of words. It’s finally getting to be fall/sprinklings of winter here in North Carolina, and I was moved to write a haiku about it.
Yikes, that sounds so sad. Yet true.
Dying bugs are fine by me, lol. Especially the mosquitoes – damn them.
And horseflies. Do you have horseflies? Nasty, I get such a reaction.
We do have horseflies, but they’re maybe not of the same variety. I think I find them more annoying than anything else.
No, their bites swell up a couple of days later. Fiercely itching in the heat. Easily infected, then antibiotics is the only solution. The good thing is they’re restricted in range to damp places (woodland, streamside) and they seldom strike above 18″ above the ground. Of course, that doesn’t apply if you’ve sat on a log while munching lunch.
Ah, I don’t recognize that variety. I might say chiggers have that woodland annoyance property here.
Possibly related. My father has another name for them, don’t remember it though, and it’s probably a Norfolk dialect word, which means it’s probably Dutch/Frisian or Danish.
A lovely haiku.
Thank you!
A nice and apt haiku.

I just found a dead cricket in the basement. Squirrels are still out digging though. (K)
Squirrels… they’re interesting critters.
This is an excellent Haiku! I love the sensory details. ❤
Thanks! Have an excellent November!
Indeed!
Haha, yeah, poor animals!
We are going to get 1-3 inches of snow starting in about an hour or so. It’s freakin’ November! Yikes! The lows for the next couple of nights is around 10 degrees. WTH?
Sad day!!!
My fishing buddy lives up in Chicago and works for Midway Airport. He told me this morning around 7:00 that they’d already gotten 3 inches of snow…
That is possibly the saddest thing I’ve heard this week.
