    Aha! So then my understanding of the poem was correct accept that I didn’t realize the hardship that necessitated change in this piece was WWI. Brilliantly done.

      Thank you! I didn’t make it explicit, since I think it could describe most conflicts, but WWI was considered the first “death by machine” war (though one could argue earlier wars were).
